I have been thinking about getting a pen tray for a long time. So as not to look like a poor cousin on all Pen Shows.
I was considering two companies: Turkish Galen Leather and Japanese Toyooka Craft.
In fact, I also considered the third option, which is to buy Chinese boxes with a lid and drawers. Not only that – I bought them. But it is a pity to waste time writing about them. This is a misunderstanding, so I close this chapter now.
Galen Leather pen tray
The first trays I bought were those from the Turkish company Galen Leather. I bought them directly on the manufacturer’s website. The cost of one tray is about USD 39.00 + plus the shipping and customs and fiscal charges, which in my case (I bought 5 coasters) amounted to about PLN 200-300 (about EUR 500).
The trays came pretty quickly. The package also contained a cloth pencil case, a printed letter, a few leaflets and, I think, tea.
Each of the stands is prepared to accommodate 11 pens. The pens I make are quite thick, but they fit without any major problems. Each pen slot has been milled. Interestingly, the stand consists of two elements. The first is a wooden box, the second is the mentioned part, the one with “slots” for the pen. I’m not sure what it’s made of. Ultimately, however, it is finished with a spray plush, this process is called flocking (I think).
It is also a good idea to fold the trays – one on top of the other. From the bottom they are simply wooden, unlike the Japanese ones, they do not have any feet, supports or anything else.
The box in which the stands come in deserves attention. It is a thick cardboard with a great print, the same in my style, which I like and I try to implement into my packaging myself.
The trays tend to be solid, massive and durable. Unfortunately, they also have their drawbacks. They are made of plywood, which is mercilessly visible – I personally offend it and I don’t like it. Another and a very big disadvantage is that the mentioned finish of the stand leaves a lot of dust on the pens – in my case it is very bothersome.
Toyooka Craft – pen tray
Toyooka Craft is my next choice. I bought mine at the Sakura Fountain Pen Gallery. The price of one item is 105 euro plus shipping. Because Sakura is a shop located in Belgium, there were no customs and tax duties.
Each of the stands can hold a maximum of 15 pens. The entire base is one element. The place with slots for pens is lined with velor or other pleasant-to-touch material, the name of which I do not know.
The arrangement of the pen slots seems to be a bit problematic. As for pens from me, especially the larger ones, and in particular ebonite pens, they are a bit too close to each other, this is my little digression. Toyooka decided to make the sides of the stand out of wood – the description shows that it is alder, apparently there is also plywood there, I think at the bottom of the box.
It allowed to avoid the unpleasant view of glued boards (plywood). As you can see, small, rubber feet are glued to the bottom. The boxes themselves can be stacked on top of each other.
The packaging in which the future trays do not impress with their design (I don’t know if they have to) – a simple box with a green logo.
I would like to point out a fact for this. Well, the material itself that lines the bottom of the tray is very nice, it does not leave as much lint as in the case of Galen Leather, but sticking it, especially to the sides of the box, leaves a lot to be desired. In my copies it is slightly frayed, there are also places where it is cut crookedly, or where it is not glued to the end.
Toyooka Craft vs Galen Leather
When I was ordering Japanese trays, I was convinced that it was definitely worth paying extra for the Japanese work. When I got them and looked at them – I still say they are prettier than the Turkish ones. Nevertheless, is it enough to pay twice as much. I do not know.
It’s a bit of a regret that Galen Leather didn’t choose to use wood on the sides. I regret a bit that Toyooka Craft did not perfect the gluing of the material to perfection.
I certainly believe that there is still room on the market for this type of assortment, which will be super polished and at a favorable price.
I think both brands will find their supporters. Despite some shortcomings, they are great products.
Assess for yourself whether it is worth investing in the stands, judge for yourself what the differences are. I personally would like to have space for about 100-150 pens. As of today, I have this space for 85 pens. I will strongly consider my next purchasing decision.

Od dawna chodziło mi po głowie zaopatrzenie się tacki na pióra. Tak aby na wszelkiej maści Pen Show’ach nie wyglądać jak biedny kuzyn.
Pod rozwagę brałem dwie firmy: turecki Galen Leather oraz japoński Toyooka Craft.
Właściwie to rozpatrywałem także trzecią opcję, czyli zakup chińskich pudełek z wieczkiem i szufladami. Mało tego – kupiłem je. Szkoda jednak czasu, aby go tracić na pisanie o nich. Jest to nieporozumienie, zatem ten rozdział zamykam już teraz.
Galen Leather pen tray
Pierwszymi tackami, które kupiłem były tacki tureckiej firmy Galen Leather. Kupiłem je bezpośrednio na stronie producenta. Koszt jednej tacki to jakieś 39.00 USD + do tego należy doliczyć przesyłkę oraz opłaty celno-skarbowe, które w moim przypadku (kupiłem 5 podstawek) wyniosły około 200-300zł.
Same podstawki przyszły dość szybko. W paczce był jeszcze materiałowy piórnik, wydrukowany list, kilka ulotek i chyba herbata.
Każda z podstawek jest przygotowana do pomieszczenia 11 piór. Pióra, które robię są dość grube, mieszczą się jednak bez większych problemów. Każdy “slot” na pióro został wyfrezowany. Co ciekawe podstawka składa się z dwóch elementów. Pierwszym jest drewniane pudełko, drugim zaś wspomniana część, ta ze “slotami” na pióra. Nie jestem pewien z czego jest wykonana. Finalnie jednak jest wykończona takim natryskowym pluszem, proces ten nosi nazwę flokowania (tak mi się wydaje).
Dobrym pomysłem jest także możliwość składania podstawek – jedna na drugiej. Od spodu zaś są one zwyczajnie drewniane, w przeciwieństwie do japońskich, nie mają żadnych nóżek, podkładek, czy czegokolwiek.
Na uwagę zasługuje pudełko w którym podstawki przychodzą. Jest to gruby karton ze świetnym nadrukiem, takim w moim stylu, który lubię i sam staram się wdrażać do swoich opakowań.
Podstawki wydają się być solidne, masywne i trwałe. Niestety mają też swoje wady. Są wykonane ze sklejki, co niemiłosiernie widać – mnie osobiście to razi i nie podoba mi się. Kolejną i to bardzo dużą wadą jest to, że wspomniane wykończenie podstawki zostawia spore ilości paprochów na piórach – w moim przypadku jest to bardzo uciążliwe.

Toyooka Craft to mój kolejny wybór. Moje kupiłem w Sakura Fountain Pen Gallery.
Cena jednej sztuki to 105 euro plus przesyłka. Poniewaz Sakura to sklep mieszczący się w Belgii opłat celno-skarbowych nie było.
Każda z podstawek mieści maksymalnie 15 piór. Cała podstawka to jeden element. Miejsce ze slotami na pióra jest wyścielone welurem lub innym miłym w dotyku materiałem, którego nazwy nie znam.
Delikatnie problematyczne wydaje się być rozstawienie slotów na pióra. Jak na pióra ode mnie, zwłaszcza te większe i w szczególności pióra ebonitowe to są one trochę zbyt blisko siebie, to taka moja mała dygresja. Toyooka zdecydował się zrobić boki podstawki z drewna – z opisu wynika, że jest to olcha, ponoć jest tam także sklejka, wydaje mi się, że na dnie owego pudełka.
Zabieg ten pozwolił na uniknięcie przykrego widoku sklejanych desek. Jak widzisz od spodu są przyklejone małe, gumowe nóżki. Same pudełka można składać jedno na drugim.
Opakowanie w którym przyszły tacki nie powala designem (nie wiem czy musi) – zwykłe pudełko z zielonym logotypem.
Chciałbym za to zwrócić uwagę na pewien fakt. Otóż sam materiał, który wyściela dno tacki jest bardzo fajny, nie zostawia aż tak dużo paprochów jak w przypadku Galen Leather, jednak jego przyklejenie, zwłaszcza do boków pudełka pozostawia wiele do życzenia. W moich egzemplarzach delikatnie się strzępi, są też miejsca w których jest krzywo przycięty, czy też nie jest przyklejony do końca.
Toyooka Craft vs Galen Leather
Kiedy zamawiałem japońskie podstawki, byłem przekonany o tym, że zdecydowanie warto dopłacić drugie tyle za japońską pracę. Kiedy je otrzymałem i obejrzałem – nadal twierdzę, że są ładniejsze od tureckich. Niemniej jednak, czy na tyle, aby płacić dwa razy więcej. Nie wiem.
Trochę żałuje, że Galen Leather nie zdecydował się na użycie drewna na bokach. Trochę żałuję, że Toyooka Craft nie dopracował do perfekcji przyklejania materiału.
Z całą pewnością uważam, że na rynku jest jeszcze miejsce na tego typu asortyment, który będzie super dopracowany oraz w korzystnej cenie.
Sami oceńcie, czy warto inwestować w podstawki, sami oceńcie jakie są różnice. Ja osobiście chciałbym mieć miejsca na około 100-150 piór. Na dzień dzisiejszy mam tego miejsca na 85 piór. Mocno rozważę kolejną decyzję zakupową.
